The Middle School Art teacher reports to the Middle School Director and collaborates with other Middle School teachers. The Middle School (grades 5-8) places a strong emphasis on habits of learning, which include a growth mindset, personal responsibility, communication, and organization. This position also includes teaching one class of Upper School art each semester.

The philosophy of the Visual Arts in Highland's Middle School is to work with each student to develop sharp, creative skills which are refined over the course of their development at Highland.  Fifth-eighth graders develop skills in distinct artistic mediums, and students engage in art projects in several areas of drawing, painting, mixed-media, printmaking, and ceramics. The goal of the Art Department is to encourage and expose students to art and allow students not only to be taught the fundamental skills, but to learn to see themselves as artists. An essential aspect to the success of the Middle School Art Department is for the teacher to demonstrate passion for the subject material and inspire the students.

• Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred
• A minimum of three years of experience teaching Art, preferably at an independent school
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
• Core knowledge of the development of Middle School-aged children
