The Carmel School is seeking a skilled English teacher to join our incredible, compassionate, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable faculty and staff for the 2026-2027 school year. Candidates who are committed to fostering a love of literature, writing, and communication while supporting students’ intellectual, academic, and personal development are encouraged to apply!
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong knowledge of literature and composition, effective classroom leadership, and a commitment to helping students grow as thoughtful readers, writers, and communicators.
Successful candidates will possess a bachelor's degree in English or a related field, and advanced degrees and/or certifications are preferred. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable background check. Summary of Essential Qualifications
Possesses a genuine love of students and an aptitude to shepherd them.
Respects, supports, and promotes the school's mission and values.
Current or eligibility for a Virginia teaching license with an English endorsement (Grades 6–12) is preferred.
Experience teaching middle school or high school English.
Experience integrating technology into instruction.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:

Previous coursework in:
American, British, and world literature
Composition and rhetoric; language development and grammar
Literary criticism and theory
Additional Expectations:
Develops lesson plans and instructional aids to effectively teach.
Demonstrates using models, manipulatives, technology, and other instructional aids.
Enables individualized and small-group instruction to meet students' needs.
Connects classroom content to student schema and real life when possible.
Manages the classroom to provide an orderly, productive environment.
Utilizes formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress.
Communicate effectively with school stakeholders about students' progress.
Selects and acquires school-approved texts, instructional aids, and supplies, and maintains inventory records.
Reports to the Head of Middle and the Head of Upper School.
Supports and contributes to co-curricular programming by coaching, club sponsorship, or other means.
Demonstrates confidentiality and professionalism with all stakeholders.
