Located six miles from Washington, D.C., St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School, an age 3 to grade 12 Episcopal schools, educates the whole child by tending to the academic, social, physical, and spiritual needs of each of our students. We seek a dynamic educator to assume the position of Kindergarten Teacher beginning in mid-August 2022. The teacher will assume primary responsibility for instruction in language arts, social studies, and mathematics, and ultimate responsibility for student assessment and parent communication. Candidates should be flexible, patient, nurturing, and collaborative. The successful candidate will possess facility and capacity with teaching the whole group, small group, and individual instruction in phonics, the reading and writing workshop model and mathematical exploration and problem-solving. The ideal candidate will also have experience with technology integration, the Responsive Classroom approach, Orton Gillingham, and the Investigations and/or Math in Focus curriculum.

The successful candidate will be required to exercise professional judgment and responsibility in keeping with the expectations of the School's faculty.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience teaching young children in a classroom setting. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess a desire for ongoing professional growth and be flexible, patient, nurturing, and collaborative.
Responsibilities
- Develop, plan, and implement the curriculum through daily lessons in Reading and Writing Workshop, mathematics, and social studies.
- Using the Responsive Classroom approach, provide a structured, encouraging, and collaborative classroom environment where deep curiosity and creativity is fostered among students.
- Actively monitor students in a variety of educational environments (classroom, carpool, playground, field trips, etc.) providing a safe, positive, and stimulating learning environment that facilitates learning.
- Commit to elevating our community's understanding of race and prioritizing our work towards racial justice.
- Maintain a palpably strong commitment to educating a diverse student body within a caring and creative environment through equitable and inclusive teaching practices, curricula, and programming.
- Develop annual goals that support the educators' professional growth.
- Collaborate with a grade-level team to enhance teaching and learning.
- Collaborate with Specials Teachers and Learning Resource Specialists on instruction and differentiation for individual students and small groups.
- Develop familiarity with each student's individual strengths, affinities, and challenges and differentiate for individual students based on their unique learning needs.
- Use existing technologies and web-based applications including the Seesaw learning management system and other emerging forms of technology and applications to assign and review student work.
- Design purposeful play opportunities to stimulate children's natural curiosity, reinforce curricular ideas, and promote social emotional learning.
- Communicate student concerns with classroom teachers, parents, and administrators.
- Initiate and maintain timely communication regarding student progress, events and activities, and home-school connections with parents through online newsletter and email.
- Respond promptly to communication from colleagues and parents.
- Maintain records of each student's academic and social and emotional growth.
- Report student progress to parents through a narrative report card with skills- checklists and also in conferences with parents.
- Demonstrate flexibility with regard to scheduling and student instruction.
- Participate in school-wide curriculum mapping process and content integration work.
- Share expertise, recent professional development, and current research in the respective field with colleagues and community.
- Attend and participate in meetings of all committees joined.
- Attend and participate in regular faculty meetings.
- Respond promptly to communication from colleagues.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings, interdisciplinary collaborations, and meetings of any committees joined.
The School accepts candidates with the following minimal qualifications:
(1) Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or another relevant field; advanced degrees are strongly encouraged; state certification is not required.
(2) A strong commitment to educating a diverse student body within a caring and creative environment.
(3) Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
(4) Previous teaching experience in an early elementary classroom.
(5) Strong references who confirm the applicant's ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
