Oakwood School, located in Annandale, VA, is accepting applications for teachers with appropriate training to serve students with language-based learning disabilities. Oakwood School is a private 1st-8th grade, co-ed day school for bright students with learning differences. Recent construction and renovation have expanded Oakwood’s campus and renovated every classroom to provide an engaging learning and teaching environment for our students and teachers.
Oakwood School classrooms are designed around a team-teaching model with two classroom teachers assigned to 12 homeroom students. Students are broken into small groups for math, reading, and written language. The team-teaching model requires good communication and professional collaboration skills to provide the best educational experience for our students.
An appropriate candidate will demonstrate positive classroom management techniques for students with language-based learning disabilities, processing challenges, dysgraphia, and attentional issues. A basic understanding of multisensory teaching methods, diverse learning styles, and specific strategies for teaching students with learning differences and dyslexia is required.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Team-teaching up to 12 students in science and social studies.
- Small group independent teaching math and reading.
- Regular parent communication & outreach on student progress.
- Completion of monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual student progress documents.
- Attendance at weekly Collaboration Meetings with cohort teachers & Academic Leadership.
Required Qualifications:
- Eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License with endorsement in Special Education, Learning Disabilities, or related field.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college.
- 2-3 years of special education classroom teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current Virginia Teaching License with endorsement in Special Education or Learning Disabilities.
- Master’s Degree in the field of Special Education or related field.
- Orton-Gillingham training or certification.
