Powhatan School seeks an enthusiastic, skilled, and student-centered Middle School Science Teacher to join our faculty beginning in August 2026. This is a full-time position teaching Life and Physical Science in grades 6–8 at a mission-driven, independent PreK–8 school serving approximately 260 students on a beautiful 90-acre campus in Boyce, Virginia.

Position Overview

The Middle School Science Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering an engaging, inquiry-based science curriculum that sparks curiosity, encourages critical thinking, and supports the academic and developmental needs of middle school students. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with colleagues, contribute to a positive middle school culture, and build meaningful relationships with students and families.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach middle school science courses aligned with Powhatan’s mission and educational philosophy
  
  
• Design lessons that are hands-on, inquiry-based, and developmentally appropriate
  
  
• Differentiate instruction to support a range of learners
  
  
• Provide clear, timely, and meaningful feedback to support student growth
  
  
• Serve as a middle school advisor, supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional development
  
  
• Build strong, trusting relationships with students and families
  
  
• Communicate effectively with families
  
  
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in science or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
  
  
• Minimum of two years of teaching experience, ideally at the middle school level
  
  
• Strong understanding of the cognitive, social, and emotional development of middle-grade students
  
  
• Experience with inquiry-based and experiential learning approaches
  
  
• Interest in and commitment to advising and relationship-centered education
  
  
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Powhatan School is a pre-kindergarten through eighth grade coeducational, independent day school located near Winchester in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
