Chesapeake Academy seeks a lower school (1-4) teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.
Lower School classroom teachers report to the Head of School, works under the leadership of the Assistant Head of School, and are members of the school's Lower School Division. Lower School teachers work collaboratively, with the Assistant Head of School and the Head of School to implement the instruction and program of the school. A full time position includes teaching the equivalent of 5 academic classes and also includes participation in duty coverage for extended day, lunch, recess, and break as scheduled and co-curricular support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work with academic team to ensure consistently high standards within the instructional program.
Meet the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the students and implement plans for meeting those needs.
Implement differentiated instructional principles in the classroom.
Integrate technology skills into the structure and activities of the classroom.
Create and maintain a classroom environment of respect, order, rapport, and comfort with clear expectations consistent with school-wide community building. Manage student behavior with respect and fairness.
Participate in the development and implementation of grade level curriculum and ensure vertical alignment throughout the program.
Document classroom instructional planning and plans for individual students.
Consistent with the school-wide philosophy, articulate and implement a wide variety of assessment tools to determine progress and performance standards of students.
Maintain accurate records and notify front office of student absences, accidents, health concerns, or other concerns for students' physical or mental safety.
Inform parents of student progress through Canvas updates, email, KUD math units, newsletters, conferences (2 x a year minimum), interim reports quarterly, and quarterly grades and comments.
Provide adequate supervision of students at all times in accordance with teacher guidelines.
Participate in professional goal setting and professional development opportunities.
Attend bi-monthly division meetings and in-house professional development.
Follow procedures and guidelines for requesting funds or materials for the classroom or professional development opportunities.
Aid in planning and implementing appropriate field trips to support the curriculum; travel with grade level on field trips.
Meet the guidelines set forth in the Employee Handbook; support the expectations of the Family Guide.
Work as part of a team to implement multi-grade level activities or collaborative tasks to support the instructional program of the school.
Support fellow teachers and contribute to the professional atmosphere of the school by being dedicated, flexible, reliable, and collegial with peers.
Communicate effectively and professionally with other employees, parents, and constituent groups of the school.
Support students' activities outside of the classroom by attending performances or games on or off campus.
Attend school meetings and special events.
Participate in admission events targeting Lower School and Early Childhood applicants. Provide feedback on visiting students to admission office.
Represent and promote the school in the larger community. Support advancement efforts and community outreach.
Fulfill all qualified duties and responsibilities as assigned, including lunch, recess, and break supervision, extended day rotation, and support of co-curriculars after school.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor or Master's degree with a major in elementary or secondary education preferred; teaching certificate preferred.
Previous experience or education teaching the designated level or subject.
Experience with differentiated instructional practices, integration of technology, and 21st century skills.
Competent in database management, word processing, and basic computer functionality.
Ability to use basic office equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
Work in a fast-paced environment, dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
Stand and move for long periods of time.
Turn, bend, reach, and occasionally use a ladder.
Maintain a valid certificate for CPR and AED usage.
Work in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment.
May work in varied extreme outside weather conditions, especially during carpool, student supervision outside, and special events.
Drive a minibus.
Attend field trips that may require extended hours.
