Tandem Friends School, a co-ed, Quaker, 5th-12th grade independent day school in Charlottesville, Virginia, seeks an experienced Middle School Latin Teacherto begin in January, 2024 as a long-term leave replacement for the entire second semester (January through May).
The TFS Middle School Latin program introduces students to the language of Latin and those who spoke Latin, the Romans. The goal is to engender a love of the language and a curiosity about Roman culture. It is designed to be a fun, energetic approach to the language.
Tandem Friends offers Latin for 5th through 8th grades. Fifth and Sixth grades are semester courses, using the Primary Latin Course to guide our language study. We supplement our cultural exploration with adapted versions of Greco-Roman mythological sources. Seventh Grade, Latin 1a, covers the first half of a Latin 1 curriculum, with 8th grade, Latin 1b, continuing our study. Students grow their love of Latin by reading and translating via stories, building vocabulary, analyzing English derivatives and exploring Latin syntax, all while using the Cambridge Latin text. We also weave discussions about Roman culture and classical mythology into our experience.
As a community of approximately 250 students in grades 5-12 and fifty faculty and staff members, close interpersonal connections are a defining feature of life at Tandem Friends School. Tandem Friends seeks teachers from all backgrounds who bring diverse skills and knowledge, a willingness to learn new things, and an appreciation for collaboration with students.
