Gesher Jewish Day School is seeking an experienced Director of Finance & HR to start in Spring 2023. This position will oversee all aspects of fiscal management and human resources at the school.
We are a warm, Pre-K - 8th grade Jewish community school dedicated to nurturing a growth mindset, cultivating joy, and Jewish belonging. We currently serve over 110 families (166 students) and approximately 45 faculty and staff members. We have creative, inspiring teachers, an administration dedicated to professional growth of all faculty, and a highly supportive board. We are located in Fairfax, Virginia in suburban Washington, D.C. on a large 28 acre wooded campus with a garden, hiking trails, vernal pond, and meadow.

The Director of Finance & HR works in collaboration with the Head of School, and professional and lay leaders, including our Board of Trustees, to create and maintain a strategic and fiscal plan for Gesher JDS. This professional reports to the Head of School, and also sits on the internal leadership team. This role works collaboratively with all other departments in the school, as well as with the Business Office Accounts Manager.
Responsibilities Include:
Accounting:
Manages the daily accounting operations covering an annual operating budget of approximately $4.5M)
Reconciles the month end close financial accounts, including bank reconciliations and prepares monthly and quarterly financial reports to the board and external parties
Collaborates with and oversees the work of the Accounts Manager
Prepares the annual budget and works with department heads on monitoring budget to actuals
Prepares IRS filings annually, including Form 990 and 1099
Liaisons with the School’s independent auditors and prepares work papers for annual audit
Assists with grant applications and grant expense tracking as needed
Approves all financial obligations; execute leases, loans, contracts and other actions requiring a commitment or receipt of financial resources
Maintains appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and to cover the liability of the School
Attends Board meetings and monthly Finance Committee meetings and Audit Committee meetings as necessary
Human Resources:
Processes semi-monthly payroll for a faculty of approximately 45 and administers medical, dental and flexible spending benefits
Tracks time off balances and accruals
Onboarding new employees and monitors compliance requirements
Oversees retirement program
Manages employee offer letters
Oversees personnel policies and procedures
Student Accounts:
Works with parents on financial issues related to their child(rens) enrollment using the FACTS Tuition Management System
What You Will Bring to the Job:
Bachelor’s degree and or/CPA with 5+ years of relevant experience with Accounting and/or Human Resources
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills on projects with minimal supervision
Experience in an independent school environment or nonprofit organization is preferred
Multi-tasking ability- able to manage priorities and workflow, and to meet deadlines
Familiarity with Quickbooks Online, Google Workspace Suite, Excel, other accounting and payroll software, SIS Software
Knowledge and experience with payroll, HR and benefits administration, as well as accounting and financial reporting and compliance
Confidentiality and compassion with parents and team members
Proactive personality with strong attention to detail
Ability to collaborate across teams both inside and outside of Gesher
