The New Community School is currently hiring a School Counselor for the 2023-2024 school year.  

Job Description:  

The position is for a School Counselor..  Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, this position is responsible for promoting student success, providing preventive services, and responding to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive counseling program that addresses academic, college and career, and personal/social development for all students. This position will develop and implement effective programs for all students while working in a supportive, professional environment.  

Applicants must have a Master's Degree in School Counseling to be an eligible candidate for this vacancy.

Essential Duties:

• Works collaboratively to develop and implement an effective school counseling program.
• Collects, analyzes, and uses data to develop, implement, and evaluate the school counseling program
• Provides individual, group counseling, and small groups for students.
• Provides workshops for students, parents, and families
• Uses evidence-based practices and research to inform decisions and programming that support the social-emotional wellness of all students
• Identifies the individual, classroom, and grade-wide social-emotional trends and needs of students, so as to design appropriate interventions and supports
• Models an appreciation for student wellness and the connection between emotional health and intellectual wellbeing
• Provides guidance and support to parents around adolescent development and issues related to mental health
• Provides students and families with both short term and long range educational planning.
• Collaborates to provide support for  college and career programming within the school.
• Maintains accurate and appropriate records. 
• Establishes positive relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community stakeholders that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual. 
•  Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. 
• Participates in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
• Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.  

Salary Information
Salary is commensurate with experience.

Requirements: The ideal candidate:

• Must meet the Virginia Department of Education guidelines for School Counselor. 
• Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, parents and the community. 
• Must possess deep understanding and knowledge of adolescent development.
• Must possess strong decision making skills.
• Must show attention to detail.
• Must demonstrate the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines..
• Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of national, state, and local school counseling standards.
• Must express a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.  
• Previous experience working with students with learning differences is preferred.
