Oakwood School in Northern Virginia is accepting applications for a Reading & Language Arts Specialist. This position is a part of our senior Academic Team and is responsible for developing and implementing the reading & language arts curriculum for all students in grades 1 - 8.
This position works in a supportive role with classroom teachers in determining and assigning instructional groups and monitoring the progress and adjustment of groups based on regular student assessments. In addition, applicants must have a strong understanding of, and an ability to, guide and facilitate multisensory teaching techniques in the classroom. Understanding the importance of the structured literacy approach and multisensory teaching is essential.
The Reading & Language Arts Specialist will work with some students individually or in small groups on a short-term basis with the aim of integrating the student(s) back into the small instructional-level group. Therefore, the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with teachers and other staff members is important.
The Reading & Language Arts Specialist needs to be trained in and have experience teaching the Orton-Gillingham method to students with learning disabilities/dyslexia. A strong understanding of phonics and morphology is essential. Written Language instruction is based on a structured writing approach, and a candidate needs to have strong writing skills as well as experience teaching structured writing to students with language-based learning needs.
Programs used at Oakwood include BrainSpring for phonology and morphology and Step Up To Writing for structured writing.
- Virginia teacher licensure or eligibility for teacher licensure in Elementary Education, Special Education and/ or Reading Specialist, Learning Disabilities, or a related field is required.
- A graduate degree is required, preferably, a Master’s degree in Reading, Special Education or Learning Disabilities.
