Job Summary:
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy seeks an energetic and creative professional to support and enhance a broad range of communications and marketing strategies. Working closely with and directly supporting the director of communications and public relations, the assistant director of communications and public relations is responsible for planning, writing, designing and managing strong, engaging content that supports the school’s mission across all forms of print and digital media.
Essential Functions:
- Assist the director of communications in managing project timelines and executing communication needs for various school departments.
- Contribute visual and written content for communication projects, including the school website, social media, news stories, school magazine and other printed materials.
- Provide photo and video coverage for the school, as needed, and assist in coordination of professional photographers and videographers.
- Assist with developing communication assets (invitations, flyers, posters, email graphics, banners, animated graphics, videos, etc.) to support communication efforts.
- Create, edit and send emails to segmented audiences.
- Assist in execution of social media strategy and contribute to measuring the effectiveness of digital media efforts through metrics and analytics.
- Organize and manage digital photo and video archives.
- Ensure adherence to style guidelines; assist with the oversight of institutional branding across all departments, divisions and initiatives.
- Oversee and support the parent volunteer committee, Saints Spirit.
- Other related duties as assigned by the director of communications.
Required Education/Background:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, marketing, graphic design or related field.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and/or Google Educational Apps.
- Experience with content management systems such as Blackbaud or Finalsite preferred.
- Two to five years of relevant, full-time experience in independent schools, higher education nonprofits or a public relations or marketing office preferred.
Required Skills:
- Ability to understand, capture, tell and depict stories that convey the mission and story of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
- Excellent project management, organization and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills; knowledge of AP Style preferred.
- Self-directed with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work quickly with a commitment to accuracy in a deadline-driven environment.
