Summary:
Blue Ridge School is an all-boys, all-boarding college preparatory school for 180 boys on a stunning 750-acre campus along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blue Ridge is only 20 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia, a vibrant community and home to the University of Virginia.
Blue Ridge employees gain the added satisfaction of working with students inside and outside the classroom, which gives them a greater influence in shaping a student’s mind and character. Our coaches have the opportunity to be full-time in the classroom or in an administrative role, based on their experience and passions.
Most teachers and administrators live on campus in homes provided by the school. On-campus housing helps give our safe, family-oriented community the sense of a small village in which students and families live and work together.
The primary, full-time, role of our head football coach could be in either administration or academics. The head football coach is responsible for overall development and advancement of a competitive athletic program while demonstrating high moral and ethical standards, positive sportsmanship and administration of a successful football team in alignment with the mission of the school. Our football program, while their competitive season is in the fall, is actively training and conditioning during the entire academic year. While football is not the primary role of this position, it is a very important aspect of our school and for our boys that have chosen our school in part to be a member of our football program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Fulfill the requirements of their primary role, whether that be teaching or administration.
- Display good sportsmanship.
- Coordinate with the Athletic Director (AD) on all matters pertaining to football and conform to all rules established by the AD.
- Organize the overall football program.
- Seek out mission appropriate football players to continue building interest in our football program.
- Design and execute a competitive schedule.
- Prepares daily practice schedule and conducts practice sessions.
- Prepare players both physically and mentally for interscholastic competition through practice, teaching of fundamental skills, and knowledge of rules.
- Supervises the cleaning, storage, and proper care of all equipment.
- Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
- Provide leadership in personal, academic, and athletic development of student-athletes.
- Assist student-athletes advance to the next level by building relationships with college coaches, development/editing of playing film and providing student recommendations.
- Partners with the student-athlete’s parent/guardian regarding their overall development.
- Monitor and provide input and instruction regarding the strength and conditioning program for the team.
- Supervise and effectively utilize assistant coaches.
- Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations.
- Participates on weekday and weekend duty teams.
- Attends on-campus special events, such as Registration, Parents Weekend, Alumni Weekend, School sponsored mixers, etc.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in an area of teaching or administration.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a successful varsity football
- Ability to interact with student-athletes as a mentor and as an educator of the sport.
- Willingness to travel to view prospects, attend games and camps.
- Knowledgeable about safety protocols and injury prevention.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and leadership skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to lift, move, push and pull equipment or boxes in excess of 40 lbs.
- Ability to handle outdoor temperatures for a reasonable period of time.
- Ability to move around campus including gym, turf fields, etc.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally.
