Congressional School is seeking a Social Studies Teacher to teach fifth and sixth grades for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing an effective learning environment through planning, organizing, developing, and assessing a comprehensive instructional program for fifth and sixth grade students. The Social Studies Teacher is knowledgeable about the cognitive and social-emotional development of children this age and possesses a firm understanding of U.S. history and geography, current events, global perspectives and world geography. In addition to the below duties and responsibilities, the Social Studies Teacher will be positive, passionate, collaborative, and innovative.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops, implements, assesses and modifies, as necessary, a dynamic social studies program for 5th and 6th grades that aligns with Congressional’s mission, vision, and values
Serves as a middle school Advisor
Uses a variety of methods, materials, and techniques to teach social studies, history, and geography
Organizes classroom systems and procedures and manages student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged and learning
Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities
Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in a meaningful learning experience.
Effectively uses formative assessments for the purposes of refining the learning environment, curriculum, assessment, instruction, and classroom leadership and management
Ability and willingness to differentiate learning to address students' diverse readiness levels, interests, and learning preferences
Embraces and models our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Actively seeks opportunities for professional development
Integrates meaningful and appropriate use of technology within the curriculum
Listens and responds to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner
Communicates student progress with parents regularly and as needed within established expectations of the school
Actively supports the school philosophy, community, and policies.
Attends various grade level, division level, school level, and subject-specific as well as other team meetings as required
Performs other duties as required
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in a related field; Master’s degree preferred
Minimum three years of experience teaching Middle School Social Studies, History and/or Global Perspectives and/or World Geography preferred,
Experience in an independent school preferred
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices.
Positive attitude and eagerness to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues in developing curriculum and planning for instruction
Proficiency in various technology platforms including Google applications
Strong initiative and organizational skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
A sense of humor and warm personality
