Position Title: English Instructor (some flexibility is course assignment is possible, but prefer the ability to teach one or more of the following: English 10 (emphasis on American Literature), English 11 (emphasis on British Literature), a literature or writing elective appropriate for high school students; average class size is less than 15). Background: Hargrave Military Academy is a boarding/day school servicing boys in the grades 7 to 13 (middle to high school to post-grad). We strive to provide the finest academics in a boarding school utilizing a military structure. Providing an academically challenging and personalized instruction for every cadet is a Hargrave tradition stretching back to our founding in 1909. A Hargrave education is not limited to academic pursuits, but empasses a whole-person development model supported by the pillars of academics, character, spiritual growth and athletics/fitness. Our focus is on meeting each student’s specific needs within the framework of a college preparatory environment. Hargrave is a community and a family of instructors, administrators, parents and mentors all working jointly to provide an environment conducive to learning, growing and enabling students to reach their full potential. Our mission is to build young men into leaders of character prepared for lifelong success. This includes a vision of moving onto college as they become knowledgeable, thinking, and responsible citizens of their community, nation, and world. Responsibilities: - Each instructor will teach a maximum of five classes as assigned by the Academic Dean. Instruction in the classroom will be commensurate with the school’s stated philosophy, objectives and purposes.
- Each instructor will serve as an advisor to specific cadets assigned by the Director of Guidance. In this capacity, the instructor will provide the student with assistance in dealing with academic and academy life and serve as a liaison with the student’s parents.
- Each instructor will coach or sponsor at least one activity as assigned by the Assistant Head of School in conjunction with the Athletic Director. Additionally, instructors will be required, based upon rosters maintained by the Student Activities Director to chaperone events each semester.
- Each instructor is responsible for classroom management for assigned classes and strives to maintain consistency across the faculty in knowing and supporting the Academy’s mission, philosophy, and standards both in and out of the classroom. Faculty members are expected to be role models for Cadets in our focus on development of the whole person academically, spiritually, physically with a focus on development of character in every aspect of the Cadet Experience at Hargrave. The faculty is expected to be cognizant of all rules and regulations that govern the corps and the faculty.
- Each instructor will expect to generally remain on campus until 4:30 for classroom afternoon study and tutoring activities, professional development, and other duties. Some allowances may be made by the supervisor for off-campus or after-hours activities with cadets. As a boarding school, instructors should understand the importance of their support in the non-academic aspects of a cadet’s life.
- Each instructor will serve on a rotating schedule for evening study halls (held twice a week). Evening Study Hall monitors will actively circulate on barracks to ensure students are on task and provide help as appropriate. Instructors should expect an evening study hall once every 2-3 weeks.
- Each instructor must participate in professional development activities as necessary to obtain and/or maintain licensure under the State of Virginia Department of Education.
- Instructors may be assigned other duties as deemed necessary for the efficient operation of Hargrave Military Academy as determined by the administration of the school.
Supervision, Performance Evaluation, Employment Contract: - All instructors report to the Academic Dean through their Department Chair.
- Annual performance evaluations are performed by the faculty member’s Department Chair and reviewed by the Academic Dean
- All instructors are given one-year contracts, renewable annually depending on the needs of the Academy.
Faculty/Staff Handbook: The Hargrave Military Academy Employee Handbook and Faculty/Staff Handbook contains the school’s academic procedures, classroom regulations, personnel policy, and faculty guidelines that govern all Hargrave Military Academy employees and is considered by the administration a part of all job descriptions. |
