The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to teach Environmental Science in the Upper School beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Serving more than 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, our school is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education. Position Overview

The Upper School Environmental Science Teacher teaches one or two sections of Honors Environmental Science, guiding students in the study of ecological systems, environmental stewardship, and the complex relationship between human societies and the natural world. The course combines scientific inquiry with historical, philosophical, and ethical reflection, inviting students to examine environmental questions through careful observation, experimentation, research, and Socratic discussion. 

We are seeking an educator who enjoys working with adolescents and who can establish an orderly, respectful, and intellectually vibrant classroom. The teacher approaches this work with both intellectual seriousness and a sense of wonder, helping students develop habits of careful observation, thoughtful inquiry, and scientific reasoning while engaging environmental questions locally and globally and considering the social, cultural, economic, and moral dimensions of human interaction with the natural world.  

In keeping with the school’s mission, the teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into instruction, allowing Christian truth to illuminate the study of environmental questions while honoring the integrity of scientific inquiry. 

This is a part-time teaching position and may involve one or two course sections depending on enrollment and the expertise and availability of the candidate. 

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field required
• Experience teaching high school science preferred
• Strong background in environmental science and scientific inquiry
• Ability to cultivate inquiry, discussion, and careful observation in the study of science
• Ability to integrate Christian faith authentically and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
