Norfolk Collegiate School is seeking applicants for an 11-month Associate Director of College Counseling to join an office that is committed to supporting students and their families through all phases of the college exploration and admission process guided by the philosophy that “fit” is different for every individual. Norfolk Collegiate School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school. The school’s mission is to develop critical thinkers, doers and explorers through innovative, engaging instruction in an inclusive supportive learning community. The Associate Director of College Counseling’s roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: supporting seniors in completing their applications and writing personal and supportive letters of recommendation; communicates clearly and effectively with students and parents on all issues and trends related to college admissions, standardized testing, and financial aid; and works closely with the Director to organize and run college counseling events and to develop new programming. The Associate Director will participate in various professional organizations, conferences, and college visit programs both on and off campus. He/she will serve as Norfolk Collegiate liaison, where appropriate, for college admission representatives that plan campus visits to meet with prospective students; advise students on curriculum choices and assist with data entry, management, and finalizing student schedules; coordinate and supervise the administration of standardized testing (PSAT/NMSQT and Advanced Placement Exams) with the Upper School Counselor; and collect, organize, and distribute scholarship and merit-based awards opportunities to 12th grade students and families as well as summer postsecondary experiences and internships for underclassmen.
Candidates should have three to five years of relevant experience in selective college admissions or college counseling. Preference will be given to those individuals holding advanced degrees as well as teaching and/or coaching experience. The Associate Director should be an excellent writer, a compelling speaker, and a thoughtful listener with outstanding time management skills. Successful candidates must be able to connect with a diverse group of students and parents and demonstrate flexibility, collegiality, and collaboration.
