School Overview: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten – 12 at our main campus and Pre-K – Grade 3 at our Harbour View campus. Founded in 1966, the school has a current enrollment of approximately 840 students, 175 employees, and sits on two campuses, a 100-acre campus and a 3-acre campus, both located in Suffolk, Virginia. Job Summary: To exercise management of all risk-associated activities in a manner that minimizes the risk of harm to students and damage to school property. The Director of Security and Operations will have primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all security and facility-related operational activities of the school. This will include direct responsibility for overseeing and managing the Director of Buildings and Grounds encompassing all maintenance and grounds upkeep, as well as overseeing, managing and coordinating the custodial staff on both campuses to ensure that Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has clean facilities.
Essential Functions: Below are job responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to:
Security: * Oversee all aspects of campus security: 1) Includes maintaining contact with local law enforcement and emergency services. 2) Plans for and responds to any possible threat. 3) Confers with School Counselors, Division Heads and/or other Administrative personnel concerning perceived or real adverse behavior demonstrated by students, staff or visitors. *Identify and propose plans to reduce risks to school personnel, students, family and school property. * Oversee/conduct all emergency drills. * Fingerprint all employees and volunteers. * Coordinate annual inspections of emergency equipment, including fire alarms and extinguishers. * Oversee operations of security cameras. * Maintain and manage Controlled Access Card System in all automated buildings. * Ensure that buildings are secured when leaving the premises. * Attend and provide security for major school events. * Maintain inventory and distribute facility keys to approved employees. * Oversee Portable Radio assignments to staff and maintain equipment service. * Maintain annual firearm certification. * Maintain and regularly update Emergency Management Plan. * Serve on the Emergency Response Team and prepare team by conducting quarterly risk scenario exercises and training, as needed. * Other duties as assigned.
Maintenance: * Oversee and manage Director of Buildings and Grounds, which includes all building maintenance for both campuses and grounds upkeep at the main campus. * Serve as the liaison to the Buildings and Grounds committee of the Board of Trustees. * Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range plans, capital improvements, and new programs and strategies that relate to buildings and grounds, including budget management. * Work with Payroll/Benefits to provide proper documentation and review of all maintenance employee timecards. * Other duties as assigned.
Housekeeping: * Oversee and manage Housekeeping Department and all housekeeping staff (8) to ensure the cleanliness of the school. * Maintain and ensure adequate housekeeping supplies are ordered, as needed. * Work with Payroll/Benefits to provide proper documentation and review of all housekeeping employee timecards. * Timely upkeep of all equipment necessary for the Housekeeping Team members. * Other duties as assigned.
Required Education / Background: * Ability to possess firearm on private school campus as defined by the Code of Virginia (subsection C of 18.2-308.016). * A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a supervisor or managerial role, preferably in law enforcement. * Possesses at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s and/or bachelor’s degree, preferred.
Required Skills: * Ability to accurately interpret procedures and regulations along with the ability to ensure appropriate implementation. * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. * Self-motivated and takes initiative to seek opportunities for continuous professional growth. * Ability to effectively and efficiently solve problems in a service-oriented manner. * Demonstrated experience using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Educational Apps (preferred, although not required). * Ability to present and effectively communicate best practices in Emergency Management to the Head of School, Board of Trustees, committees, and administration. * Ability to manage multiple projects at one time and set priorities as needed. * Must embrace the School’s mission and culture and represent the school positively in the community.
