School Overview: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten – 12 at our main campus and Pre-K – Grade 3 at our Harbour View campus. Founded in 1966, the school has a current enrollment of approximately 840 students, 175 employees, and sits on two campuses, a 100-acre campus and a 3-acre campus, both located in Suffolk, Virginia. Job Summary: This individual will be responsible for teaching and coordinating all Spanish lessons for the Lower Schools at the Main and Harbour View campuses. The Spanish program in Lower School encompasses Spanish classes for students in Pre-K 2 through Grade 3 on a 7-day rotating schedule. The Lower School Spanish teacher will have significant latitude to shape the program in concert with the school’s mission. This individual will be expected to hold the highest standards of educational professionalism while engaging students in the Spanish curriculum. This individual should be able to work in collaborative atmosphere, while continuing to advance the current Spanish program, and support all other programs of the school. We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities: Essential Functions: * Demonstrate a willingness to engage students in developing introductory skills in speaking, reading and writing Spanish for comprehension, communication, appreciation and interpretation. * Instruct Spanish classes once or twice in the 7-day rotation, depending on the grade level, on both campuses. * Provide after-school enrichment in Spanish, as needed. * Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences and lead to the development of those skills identified as being critical for living in the 21st century. * Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs. * Lead students to develop critical thinking and process skills. * Familiarize students to the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world. * Possess specific knowledge of the structure and content of the Spanish language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar. * Work closely with classroom teachers to provide interdisciplinary opportunities whenever possible and to select programs which are curricular related. * Work with both Heads of Lower School to order all supplies, materials, and equipment necessary Spanish-related activities. * Maintain open communication with parents, students, division heads, and teachers. * Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and enhance learning. * Participate in divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities. * Perform other duties as assigned by the Heads of Lower School at the Main and Harbour View campuses. * Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Required Education/Background: * Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Elementary Education with a double major or minor in Spanish is preferred, but Spanish course-work beyond the beginning level will be considered. * Current teaching certification in the state of Virginia required. * Technology proficiency is essential including use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the use of SMART Boards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with Google Educational Apps, Blackbaud, WhippleHill, On Campus and On Message experience preferred.
Required Skills: * Familiarity with teaching 21st Century and possesses a student centered outlook. * Understanding of the needs of students in a challenging academic independent school environment. * Ability to collaborate effectively with other math teachers and ensure cohesion of the program across divisions. * Understands the mission of the school and the need to focus on the education of the whole child. * Takes initiative and is self-motivated. * Values parents as a vital resource in educating a child. * Represents the school positively in the community. * Excellent organizational skills and communication skills, both written and oral. * Understands the critical nature of building positive working relationships with students, parents and colleagues. * Work collaboratively not only with teachers within the department but also school-wide.
