Green Hedges School seeks an experienced Montessori Preschool Assistant teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. Green Hedges is an independent preschool through Grade 8 school with approximately 150 students in Vienna, VA, fourteen miles west of Washington, DC.
Green Hedges School includes three divisions:
Preschool & Kindergarten: Ages 3 through 5 (Montessori philosophy)
Lower School: Grades 1 through 5 (traditional preparatory)
Middle School: Grades 6 through 8 (traditional preparatory)
The preschool and kindergarten program at Green Hedges School adheres to the Montessori philosophy of education. Montessori is a three-year program, with children entering school after their third birthday and continuing through their fifth year of age. Children may also enter at age four and five (kindergarten) successfully, depending on their willingness to learn, their ability to interact positively with others, their listening skills, and their degree of self-control.
(Part-time, though full-time status may be realized with additional Extended Day responsibilities)

A successful candidate for the Montessori Preschool Assistant Teacher will have: Undergraduate degree (masters preferred) in early childhood/elementary education or a related field • Montessori teaching experience, and/or interest in pursuing certification • Proficient knowledge of the academic and social-emotional development of young children • A high level of energy • Good time management skills • Initiative • Collaborative skills • Creativity • Strong communication skills • Organization Skills
Successful candidates must successfully complete a required background check.
The Montessori Preschool Assistant Teacher assists the Directress (lead teacher) in guiding all facets of life and learning in the Montessori classroom. Primary tasks include establishing the prepared environment, supporting children with lessons, assisting in the implementation of curriculum and class routines, engaging in ongoing assessment of the children, and communicating student performance with the Directress and the Montessori team.

Support five areas of development: practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, and culture (history, geography, science). (Special subject teachers provide instruction in music and movement, library, and French.)
Create positive learning communities within the classroom that acknowledge and respect children’s social and emotional interactions and growth.
Employ a variety of teaching methods to ensure optimal learning for all students.
Collaborate closely with the Montessori Directress and Special Subject Teachers.
Support parent involvement with snacks and class activities.
Build on an expanding knowledge of how children learn best.
Work diligently and promptly to maintain positive and constructive home-school communication.
Assist with parent-teacher conferences, both formal and informal.
Attend school events.
Use assessment and evaluation to guide instructional decisions; maintain accurate, up-to-date records in collaboration with Directress.
Perform professional duties efficiently, manage resources effectively, and meet deadlines and meeting schedules set by the School.
Work towards school-wide goals and curriculum initiatives.
Observe the policies and procedures as set forth in the Personnel Manual.
Serve as an advocate for the School in the wider community.
Perform professional duties as assigned by the Head of School or the Assistant Head of School. These duties include but are not limited to recess duty, lunch duty, and dismissal duty.
