Tandem Friends School seeks an energetic, seasoned middle school administrator to be our next Middle School Director. Our 5th through 8th grade middle school program of approximately 115 students encourages student responsibility and academic challenge in developmentally grounded ways within a dynamic and supportive school community. Our academic program is a mix of progressive and traditional styles of teaching which incorporates integrated curricula and project/problem-based learning.
The Middle School Director is responsible for the daily operations of middle school, including student guidance matters, teacher supervision, parent communications, and program development, as well as the general organizational matters of the division. As is the way of Friends Schools, teachers are highly involved in decisions that affect their division and school, thus we seek a division leader with a collaborative mindset and a skillset that supports both visionary leadership and collective decision making. Twelve Middle school teachers report directly to the Middle School Director.
The Middle School Director is a key member of the school’s senior leadership team; in addition to their primary focus on the general well-being and programmatic development of the middle school division, the Middle School Director is collaboratively involved in the full scope of school operations: admissions, marketing, development, budget management, anti-bias and inclusive practices, strategic planning and so forth.
We seek candidates for the Middle School Director position who, in addition to a strong foundation in middle school academics and faculty supervision and growth, have significant experience in school guidance work with adolescents and whose experience prepares them to support the division in regard to adolescent development, equity and inclusion, and learning differences. Paramount to this position is love for the life stage that is middle school, and a solid understanding and deep appreciation of middle schoolers themselves, their families, and the teachers who are drawn to this age group.
The ideal candidate has: a profound understanding of both adolescent and adult development and the dynamics of school change; has high energy and a great sense of humor; is organized, flexible, team oriented; and is committed to diversity and inclusion and enthusiastic about Friends Education (Quaker Schools). We seek candidates with 3+ years experience in middle or upper school administrative roles and prior teaching experience. A Master’s degree is required. A background in counseling is a plus.
