Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School (AJCES) is seeking a creative, detail oriented, and organized individual to join our school family to help promote our mission, growth, and sustainability. The Development and Communications Assistant provides administrative support to the Development Office and participates in all fundraising activities including donor relations, database management, annual appeals, and special events. The position provides overall support for AJCES’ communications activities to achieve timely, accurate and relevant communications that advance the School’s mission and operations.
AJCES is an independent, faith-based school that provides full-tuition scholarships to 4th-8th grade students of limited economic resources from Richmond’s East End. Through a program focused on the whole child, we help empower students and graduates to change the trajectory of their lives, setting their sights on success in high school, college, and serving their communities. Unlike traditional private schools that generate a large part of their funding from tuition and alumni contributions, AJCES provides full-tuition scholarships to all students and relies on the financial support of individuals, foundations, corporations, churches, and other organizations in the community to cover our expenses. Thus the Development and Communications Assistant plays a critical role in contributing to the long-term viability of the School.
The position is full-time, but a part-time arrangement is negotiable.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage the development database to ensure the system contains complete and accurate records relating to all aspects of fundraising. Issue periodic reports to keep the Director of Development and Head of School informed on status on fundraising efforts.
Process donations; prepare gift acknowledgement letters and other correspondence; prepare and process deposits.
Assist with tracking donor engagement, giving patterns and possibility for donor enhancements.
Create and run reports and queries as needed. Compile and maintain direct appeals mailing lists, newsletter mailing lists, etc.
Assist with the grants management process by tracking foundation deadlines for grant reports due.
Assist with production and mailing of mid-year and year-end appeal letters, and other donor communications.
Assist with management of tax credit transactions.
Work closely with the Director of Development and Communications and other staff to implement effective communications strategies and activities such as updating the website, developing and sending out email newsletters, managing social media channels, creating and formatting print publications, and creating video and other multi-media communications.
Assist with special events and projects.
Perform other related duties as required.
The successful candidate will have a BA/BS and at least two years of professional experience, preferably in a nonprofit development/communications setting. Donor database management experience strongly preferred. Additional qualifications include having:

An engaging writing style and the ability to create timely communications pieces using a variety of media; experience using social media channels for organizational promotion and communications

Good interpersonal skills, ability to maintain a level of professionalism when interacting with donors, volunteers, colleagues, and School families. Relationship-building is a key component of this job.
Integrity, including maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive donor information
Strong working knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, photo editing software, video creation software, Constant Contact, and Google platforms preferred
